On behalf of the Republic of Lebanon, I have the honor to congratulate UNIDO, on its 50th Anniversary.
During the past five decades, UNIDO has been playing an important role in supporting national efforts for industrial development, especially in developing countries. The fact that UNIDO’s mandate - inclusive and sustainable industrialization (ISID) - was included in the SDG 9 aimed at “Building resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation” is a clear demonstration on the relevance of UNIDO in the development arena and how much it is indispensible for developing countries. Through its three programmatic fields namely, Creating shared prosperity, advance economic competitiveness, and safeguarding the environment, UNIDO has an important body of knowledge and expertise that could lead and help development efforts in many parts of the world, making a difference in the life of many people.
In Lebanon, UNIDO technical cooperation activities as well as analytical and policy advice services supported our country to improve our national capacity in the field of industrialization. Looking back at those fifty years of UNIDO-Lebanon cooperation, we are proud of the impact generated by UNIDO’s projects. Today, Lebanon benefits from success stories like the LibanPack, the innovative packing support centre to support SMEs, Lebanese Cleaner Production Centre (LCPC) which is helping in greening industries in Lebanon and the recently launched Creative Lebanon Hub, which gives artisans and small entrepreneurs the opportunity to tell their stories and disseminate a message of a Lebanon which is resilient through creativity.
Our recently issued Lebanon Industrial Vision 2025 wishes to develop an industry that effectively and consistently contributes to sustainable development. In these efforts UNIDO is our closest multilateral partner. With the recent signature of the Country Programme 2015-2018, more projects are being implemented in supporting the development of industrial parks, advancing the competitiveness of agro-industrial SMEs, the promotion of sustainable investment in energy efficiency solutions in the industrial sector, and facilitate the economic inclusion of Lebanese women and youth in rural areas affected by the Syrian refugee crisis.
I would like to take this opportunity to commend the efforts of UNIDO DG Li Yong, and all staff member of UNIDO for their relentless efforts to make the partnership with Lebanon a success story for all of us. We will continue working with UNIDO for further strengthening the Organization’s programme in Lebanon and we wish the Organization all the best for the future.
